A note by Gary Pisano providing a framework to design a research and development (R&D) strategy. Start with the simple notion that a strategy is a system approach to solving a problem. A good strategy provides consistency, coherence, and alignment. The approach suggests that your R&D strategy should include 4 strategic levers: architecture, processes, people, and project portfolios.
